The province takes its name from the English-speaking settlers in Acadia who were known as “Brunswickers”, after the capital of the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg in Germany. The duchy had been split between Britain and Hanover by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1714.
New Brunswick is bounded on the north by Quebec 's Gaspé Peninsula and Chaleur Bay, in the east by the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and Northumberland Strait, and in the south, by the the Bay of Fundy, which has the highest tide in the world, with a rise of 16m.
