(Geodetic Glossary, pp. 57) The Sea Level Datum of 1929 is a vertical control datum in the United States by the general adjustment of 1929. Mean sea level was held fixed at the sites of 26 tide gauges, 21 in the United States and 5 in Canada.
Originally known as Sea Level Datum of 1929, NGVD 29 was determined and published by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey [2] and used to measure the elevation of a point above and depression below mean sea level (MSL).

For example, native NGVD 29 or NAD 27 data would be transformed to match data more recently collected using NAVD 88 or NAD 83, and the original datum should be documented in the report. (The archival data should remain in the native datum because transformations are approximations and not reversible.)
