  4. Jan 1, 2018 · Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago by four powerful wizards: Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff. They chose to split the students into four ‘houses’, each bearing their surnames and featuring young wizards and witches who displayed abilities and personalities they wanted to nurture.

    • Ravenclaw. One of the tallest towers with the most beautiful view is the perfect place for the Ravenclaw common room. Their room is said to be the airiest one, which isn’t a coincidence – air is an element often used as a symbol for the mind.
    • Hufflepuff. Kindness, fairness, and dedication are what landed Hufflepuff in second place. Sometimes bravery comes in the smallest of deeds. Showing true kindness to your colleague in need sometimes takes more courage than fighting a war.
    • Gryffindor. Courage and chivalry are what true Gryffindors value most. They are knights in shiny armors, ready to save the day and receive eternal glory.
    • Slytherin. Slytherins have some great qualities we respect about them, but it seems unfair to put anyone else last when Slytherin has such a long history of discrimination.
    • Gryffindor. ‘You might belong in Gryffindor, Where dwell the brave at heart, Their daring, nerve and chivalry. Set Gryffindors apart.’
    • Ravenclaw. ‘Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw. If you’ve a ready mind. Where those of wit and learning. Will always find their kind.’
    • Hufflepuff. ‘You might belong in Hufflepuff. Where they are just and loyal. Those patient Hufflepuffs are true. And unafraid of toil.’
    • Slytherin. ‘Or perhaps in Slytherin. You’ll make your real friends. Those cunning folk use any means. To achieve their ends.’
