Feb 19, 2024 · Between 1931 and 1934, Colonial Williamsburg rebuilt the old Capitol based on the design of the first Capitol that stood from 1705 to 1745 (because it was more well documented). It opened to the public on February 23, 1934. The next day, the General Assembly of Virginia convened for a commemorative session at the site.
Originally, the building housed a General Court on one side and the House of Burgess on the other. The building was built after the capitol was moved from Jamestown to Williamsburg and was not used any more when the capitol was moved to Richmond in 1780. Tours of the first floor are now open to the public.
