May 1, 2020 · Baltimore. Can someone help explain to me if there is any difference between post punk and new wave? I don't think there is. Now, I know that the both terms could be considered meaningless since they've both been used as a catch-all in the past.
The existence of new wave creates a false dichotomy with post-punk, where post-punk is the 'artsy' one and new wave is the 'commercial' one. While this is not necessarily true (the distinction between the two is even more meaningless than the one between punk and post-punk), the two can generally be seen as the two sides of the same coin.
