May 24, 2008 · In the beginning the city consisted only of Manhattan and Bronx. Box numbers start at The Battery and continue north to the Westchester line. This is why Bronx and Manhattan have the same borough prefix, 6-6, no 2 box numbers are the same. (The exceptions are 8000 series boxes which came into being in recent times).
