Some of the most well known silver bearing coinage from the Dutch Netherlands are the Guilder. Most people call these coins Guilders but in actuality they are Netherland and/or Dutch Guldens, as you can see in the image below ‘Gulden’ is what is stamped on the coin.
The Netherlands was initially on a bimetallic standard, with the guilder equal to 605.61 milligrams of fine gold or 9.615 grams of fine silver. In 1840, the silver standard was adjusted to 9.45 grams, with the gold standard suspended in 1848. In 1875, the Netherlands adopted a gold standard with 1 guilder equal to 604.8 milligrams of fine gold.
The Dutch guilder originated in 1680 as a 10.61 g (0.374 oz) silver coin with a silver purity of 91.0%, minted by the States of Holland and West Friesland. The British Guianan guilder was in use in British Guiana, 1796 to 1839. In 1753, Bavaria and Austria-Hungary agreed to use the same conventions.
The guilder was adopted as the Netherlands’ monetary unit in 1816, though its roots trace to the 14th century, when the florin, the coinage of Florence, spread to northern Europe, where it became known as the guilder. (Indeed, the abbreviation for the Dutch currency remained “Hfl,” which denoted it as the Holland florin.)
The Netherlands Antillean guilder (Dutch: gulden) is the currency of Curaçao and Sint Maarten, which until 2010 formed the Netherlands Antilles along with Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius. It is subdivided into 100 cents (Dutch plural form: centen). The guilder was replaced by the US dollar on 1 January 2011 on Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius.
The BV of a silver coin is equal to its weight in silver multiplied by the current price of silver. At this writing, silver is selling around $20 US dollars per troy ounce. The price of silver changes every day, so look it up (e.g., kitco.com). Today's BV for a 1 gulden is 0.151 x 20 = $3 and BV for a 2 1/2 gulden is 0.347 x 20 = $7.
