Vietnamese religion was a syncretic amalgamation of the three great religions of East Asia—Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism—onto which had been added a rich variety of preexisting animist beliefs. All Vietnamese believed in this single religious conflation in one form or another, but these forms varied greatly.
Buddhism. Buddhism was introduced in Vietnam in the second century BC. At the time of the Ly Dynasty (1010-1214), it became the state religion. It subsequently lost its state-religion status, but remained as the belief of the majority of people, permeating Vietnamese culture.
- Folk religion – The main religion in Vietnam. Folk religion is with almost 90 precent of the population, the biggest religion in Vietnam. Folk believes are a significant and deeply rooted aspect of Vietnamese culture.
- Buddhism. Buddhism holds a significant presence in Vietnam, with temples and pagodas adorning the landscape. Surprisingly, despite the visible presence, only about 10% of the Vietnamese population identifies as Buddhist.
- Christianity (Catholicism & Protestantism) Christianity in Vietnam comprises a minority religious group, accounting for approximately 8% of the Vietnamese population.
- Hoahaoism. Hoahaoism is a syncretic religion that originated in Vietnam in the 1930s. It combines elements of Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and other indigenous beliefs.
Vietnamese folk religion (Vietnamese: tín ngưỡng dân gian Việt Nam, sometimes just called đạo lương, Chữ Hán: 道良) is a group of spiritual beliefs and practices adhered by the Vietnamese people. About 86% of the population in Vietnam are reported irreligious, but are associated with this tradition.
