I admit that this is an extreme position, but, I believe that if it weren't for Beethoven's sonatas, Clementi's Op. 36 collection of sonatinas would be the best piano work from the classical era. (So many awesome bits are packed together so tightly, I sometimes worry they're junk-food.)
