As you walk you will notice a black iron fence to your right, beyond which is Gettysburg’s public Evergreen Cemetery. Established in 1853, it was this cemetery that gave the hill its name.

The Soldiers’ National Cemetery was turned over to the Federal Government in 1872, and transferred to the National Park Service in 1933. Gettysburg National Cemetery sign along Taneytown Road. This time, Major General George Gordon Meade —the hero of the Battle of Gettysburg—served as the keynote speaker. In 1872, the Federal government took stewardship of the cemetery and now it remains in the hands of Gettysburg National Military Park. Of the 3,354 bodies buried in the Soldiers’ National Cemetery, 979 are unknown.
