But non-proprietary names, except for a few, usually gives no indication of the stereochemistry of a drug. Who determines the non-proprietary name of a drug? The non-proprietary names are chosen by some official agencies:
a. The name under which the drug is listed in the U.S. Pharmacopeia. b.The name given to the drug by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) c. The proprietary name of the drug given by a manufacturer. d. The chemical name of the drug given by its developer. C.The proprietary name of the drug given by a manufacturer.
In general, think of the generic name of a drug as a simple form of its chemical name. For each new drug marketed by a drug manufacturer, the United States Adopted Names (USAN) Council selects a generic name. This name is nonproprietary, meaning it does not belong to any one manufacturer.
