Medieval universities. The first German universities were founded in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. The oldest university in Germany is the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, which opened its doors to students in 1386. Only two years later, in 1388, the University of Cologne was founded by the citizens of the city.

Gradually declined during the 17th and 18th centuries until re-established as a state-owned institution by Karl Friedrich, Grand Duke of Baden in 1803.
European universities date from the founding of the University of Bologna in 1088 or the University of Paris (c. 1150–70). The original medieval universities arose from the Roman Catholic Church schools.
