     Most of the times these terms Web Server and Application server are used interchangeably.

     Following are some of the key differences in features of Web Server and Application Server:

     • Web Server is designed to serve HTTP Content. App Server can also serve HTTP Content but is not limited to just HTTP. It can be provided other protocol support such as RMI/RPC
     • Web Server is mostly designed to serve static content, though most Web Servers have plugins to support scripting languages like Perl, PHP, ASP, JSP etc. through which these servers can generate dynamic HTTP content.
     • Most of the application servers have Web Server as integral part of them, that means App Server can do whatever Web Server is capable of. Additionally App Server have components and features to support Application level services such as Connection Pooling, Object Pooling, Transaction Support, Messaging services etc.
     • As web servers are well suited for static content and app servers for dynamic content, most of the production environments have web server acting as reverse proxy to app server. That means while servicing a page request, static contents (such as images/Static HTML) are served by web server that interprets the request. Using some kind of filtering technique (mostly extension of requested resource) web server identifies dynamic content request and transparently forwards to app server

     Example of such configuration is Apache Tomcat HTTP Server and Oracle (formerly BEA) WebLogic Server. Apache Tomcat HTTP Server is Web Server and Oracle WebLogic is Application Server.

     In some cases the servers are tightly integrated such as IIS and .NET Runtime. IIS is web server. When equipped with .NET runtime environment, IIS is capable of providing application services.

     This is a detailed answer with some scenarios to clearly understand the difference and similarity, and how both can work in conjunction.

     Application Server is a term that sometimes is mixed with a web server. While a web server handles mainly HTTP protocols, the application server deals with several different protocols, including, but not limited, to HTTP.

     The Web server's main job is to display the site content and the application server is in charge of the logic, the interaction between the user and the displayed content. The application server is working in conjunction with the web server, where one displays and the other one interacts.

     The information traveling back and forth between the server and its client is not restricted to simple display markup, but to interaction between the two.

     In most cases, the server creates this interaction through a component API, such as J2EE (Java 2 Platform), EJB (Enterprise JavaBean) and other different application software models.

     An example:

     The best way to understand the difference between the scenarios where an application server works with the web server versus a scenario where there isn't an application server is through an online store.

     Scenario 1: Web server without an application server

     you have an online store with only a web server and no application server. The site will provide a display where you can choose a product from. When you submit a query, the site performs a lookup and returns an HTML result back to its client. The web server sends your query directly to the database server (be patient, I will explain this one in our next nugget) and waits for a response. Once received, the web server formulates the response into an HTML file and sends it to your web browser. This back and forth communication between the server and database server happens every time a query is run.

     Scenario 2: Web server with an application server

     if the query you want to run has already been done previously and no data has changed since then, the server will generate the results without having to send the request to the database server. This allows a real-time query where a second client can access the same info and receive real time, reliable information without sending another duplicate query to the database server. The server basically acts as an intermediate between the database server and the web server. This allows the information pulled to be reusable while in the first scenario, since this info is embedded in a particular and "customized" HTML page, this is not a reusable process. A second client will have to request the info again and receive another HTML embedded page with the info requested -highly inefficient. Not to mention that this type of server is very flexible due to its ability to manage its own resources, including security, transaction processing, messaging and resource pooling.

     To support such a variety of complex tasks this server must have a built in redundancy, great processing power and high amount of RAM to handle all the data it's pulling in real time.

     Both terms are very generic, one containing the other one and vice versa in some cases.

     I think that the main point is that the web server exposes everything through the http protocol, while the application server is not restricted to it.

     That said, in many scenarios you will find that the web server is being used to create the front-end of the application server, that is, it exposes a set of web pages that allow the user to interact with the business rules found into the application server.

     A "Web Application" is one in which a browser is commonly used as the client. A Web application IS A Client/Server Application. In other words, you could think of a client/server application as a superclass, where the web application is a child class.

     If you want to use a web browser as the tool to interface with your Java app, then you need a web server. The browser is simply an app that tries to make a network connection with another app, and passes some text as defined by the HTTP protocol.

     You would have a choice of three scenarios for this:

     • Write an app that accepts network connections, processes HTTP, and sends back a response.
     • Write a Java app that uses the very basic web server built into Java 18 and later. Note that this web server is not intended to be a feature-rich or commercial-grade server.
     • Write a Jakarta Servlet class that runs on top of a Servlet container with a web server. For your needs, either Apache Tomcat or Eclipse Jetty would work well as both the Servlet container and the web server.

     For your scenario, the middle option using Java JEP 408 seems most appropriate and easiest.

     There is nothing “primitive” about Swing. It is a fully-developed feature-rich GUI framework. Swing comes built in with every JDK. And Swing will be supported for many years to come.

     However, the design and features of Swing may or may not suit your tastes. And Swing is now in maintenance-mode.

     An alternative is JavaFX, now actively developed as the OpenJFX libraries.

     To use JavaFX, you must either add the OpenJFX libraries to your project or else deploy to a JDK that comes bundled with the OpenJFX libraries (ZuluFX, LibericaFX, etc.).

     Yes the GUI and and your calculator business logic would all be plain Java classes, all peers, all running together within the same JVM.

     Yes. You could cook up JavaScript code to implement your little calculator. This JavaScript could be placed within the text of a file with the HTML of a web page.      But this scenario eliminates Java, and you said you want to (a) write your calculator in Java, and () use a web browser. So we go back to the three options listed above.

     Yes you could deploy a database server on your local machine. Then you could find and use a JavaScript binding tool to talk to that database.

     But then you would not be using Java and all its goodness. For that scenario I would choose to write a JavaFX app with an embedded Java-based database engine such as H2. This would result in a single all-in-one double-clickable-app solution.

     But that would be my choice based on my own preferences and skill set. Other people might choose other solutions.

     👉 The “offline” part may be distracting you.

     Conventional computers with modern operating systems such as macOS, BSD, Linux, Windows, etc. are always “online” in that they all maintain a networking stack. That network stack can be used locally by processes within the one computer to communicate with each other. Whether you happen to have an Ethernet cable plugged in, or WiFi turned on, makes little difference to the computer. The networking stack in the OS is still available and active regardless of outside network access.

     So client-server architecture works just as well within a single computer as it does between computers. (Actually, it’s works faster locally, as hopping on and off the network is terribly slow.)

     Why choose client-server architecture for a local app? Either:

     • You are skilled in, and prefer, the tools for a client-server architecture.
     • You want to eventually move from local-only to being networked.

     If neither of those two is true, then the JavaFX with H2 solution I mentioned is likely a better fit for a Java programmer.

     By the way, let me put in a plug for Vaadin Flow, a GUI framework for building web apps in pure Java.

     Here's a quick, dirty, and very general explanation of a 4-tier architecture, which I'm assuming may best apply to your application:

     Presentation Layer : The interface to the outside world (web site) Application Layer : The mechanics necessary to create the interface(s) to the outside world (web application frameworks, web services) Business Logic Layer : The actual logic that embodies/simulates/emulates your business's processes and workflows (algorithms, transformations, approval processes, etc.) Database Layer : The database and the logic needed to query information from it

     In general, web services are not part of the business logic layer. That layer is usually protected as much as the database layer, because there could be trade secrets or confidential ways of doing things in there, and you usually don't want anyone accessing that directly, except programatically or through approved interfaces (such as web services).

     Web services, application layers, and business logic can be aptly compared to Coca-Cola and it's business. Bottles and cans are usually how Joe Blow consumes Coke's product (e.g. web site in the presentation layer), but other businesses want to be able to serve Coca-Cola to their customers as well, so Coke lets them use carbonated water and Coca-Cola syrup (e.g. web services in the application layer). Coke's secret formula (e.g. business logic layer), and Coke's distribution processes to get it into the store (e.g. application layer) are all hidden from the consumer. Joe Blow doesn't care how it gets into the store, he just knows he can get Coke from a variety of sources (web site, mobile client, etc.). And Coke doesn't want people knowing its secret formula (business logic). If you want a Coke, you have to go through a store or a restaurant (approved interfaces).
