Jun 3, 2015 · Wako Tonkatsu. Tonkatsu, for the uninitiated, is panko-crusted, deep fried pork cutlet. It’s crispy, crunchy, juicy and so, so delicious. Tonkatsu is basically a Japanese take on schnitzel. It’s typically served with fluffy white rice, piles and piles of finely shredded cabbage, pickles, and miso soup.
- Ginza. The Ginza neighborhood in central Tokyo is known worldwide for its stores and shopping, especially for luxury brands. But Ginza is also home to some of the most expensive restaurants in Japan and over 1,000 sushi restaurants (when neighboring Tsukiji is included).
- Nihonbashi. During the Edo period, Nihonbashi, including sub-neighborhoods such as Ningyōchō, was the center of the townspeople’s culture. It was where the city’s main fish market was from early in the 17th century until 1923.
- Asakusa. As with the Nihonbashi area, Asakusa still has the charms of old Edo and early 20th-century Tokyo. The main attraction of Asakusa for over one thousand years has been Sensōji, the biggest and oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo.
- Kagurazaka. Kagurazaka, a neighborhood located up the hill from Iidabashi Station, may be best known for its numerous French restaurants and bistros, thus earning it the nickname of Tokyo’s “Little Paris.”
- Sushi. You simply cannot ignore sushi when you visit Tokyo. The fish market (Tsukiji fish market) brings tons of fresh seafood from other parts of Japan and around the world.
- Yakitori (Grilled chicken skewers) This is one of the traditional Japanese dishes. You might have already tried it back home or seen it on another Japan food guide.
- Ramen noodles. It goes without saying that there are A LOT of ramen restaurants in Tokyo, and Japanese people really love ramen. It is cheap (you can get a decent one for 500 JPY or 600 JPY) and tasty.
- Okonomiyaki (Japanese savory pancakes) Okonomiyaki is a popular dish in Japan, and people even cook it at home pretty often. At the same time, there are a lot of restaurants that specialize in Okonomiyaki in Tokyo.
