- In this scene Romeo finds Juliet’s body and takes the poison he has purchased, rather than live without her. His body is then found by Friar Laurence who realises what has happened and is there when Juliet wakes up. Rather than stay with her, the Friar leaves the tomb and Juliet is left alone. She then kills herself with Romeo’s dagger.

Romeo goes to Friar Laurence ’s chambers. Friar Laurence feels pity for Romeo, who seems “wedded to calamity.”. Romeo asks what punishment Prince Escalus has handed down, and the friar tells Romeo he is to be banished. Romeo states that death would be more merciful, but Friar Laurence assures Romeo that now he has the chance to see the world.
Friar Laurence rushes in to find Romeo dead and Juliet awakening from her death-like slumber. Confused, Juliet asks Friar Laurence where her Romeo is, and he can do nothing but tell her the horrible truth. Hearing the Watchmen in the distance and fearing they will be caught, Friar Laurence begs Juliet to hurry.
Enter Nurse: The Nurse brings news that Juliet is in just as bad shape as Romeo. Romeo, wild with guilt at the pain he has caused Juliet, tries to stab himself. Friar Laurence lectures Romeo and tells him what to do -- go to Juliet, then to Mantua until the Prince can be persuaded to pardon him.
Friar Laurence tries to mitigate their mourning by telling them that Juliet is in a better place. All her parents wanted for her after all, he points out, was her "promotion”—now, she has climbed to the highest heights of all. He urges them to dress her in finery, adorn her with herbs, and bring her to church.
