Jan 13, 2023 · The general consensus is that it’s possible to plan a trip into Frankfurt with a layover of at least 5 hours. A brief breakdown of that time looks like this: 1 hour to deplane and go through customs. 1/2 hour to travel into the city. 2 hours to explore. 1/2 hour to travel back to the airport. 1 hour to proceed through security to your gate.
For a long layover consider a visit to Mainz, about a 30 minute trip on the ICE high speed train with several express options daily. Once you arrive at the city center of Frankfurt, the Alstadt is the most famous area to visit. It is the oldest part of this beautiful city of Frankfurt. Many of the sites here were reconstructed after World War II.
Tours and Visitors Terrace. You can take one of the many airport tours (for extra cost) at the visitor center. They also offer a variety of tours for the surrounding sightseeing places, all for additional cost. If you would like some fresh air, there is a visitor’s terrace in Terminal 2, for a few euros you can visit it numerous times per day.
