HISTORY. Following the success of their Models Y and Z, the Granville Brothers of Springfield, MA developed the R-1 and R-2 models for the 1932 air racing season. (Gee Bee is a "spelling out" of the brothers' GB initials.) The aircraft were similar, differing chiefly in powerplant and cowling design.
All were a contribution to the advancement of aviation during a period in history when civilians made The Golden Age of Aviation. The first biplane is now at the New England Air Museum at Bradley Field, Connecticut. There, you may also view a replica of the 1932 Gee Bee #11 (R1 Model) in which Jimmy Doolittle won the World’s Land Speed Record.

Granville Brothers Aircraft was an aircraft manufacturer from 1929 until its bankruptcy in 1934 that was located at the Springfield Airport in Springfield, Massachusetts. [1] The Granville Brothers—Zantford, Thomas, Robert, Mark and Edward—are best known for the three Gee Bee Super Sportster racers, the Models Z, R-1 and R-2.

The Gee Bees--a series of 1930s racing planes--are perhaps the most famous, or infamous, aircraft in aviation history, depending on one's viewpoint. During the early 1930s, the Gee Bees were among the fastest planes of the day and won several prestigious National Air Races , but several pilots also lost their lives while flying them.
Mar 10, 2017 · The R-1’s Wasp was swapped out for a more powerful Pratt & Whitney Hornet, capable of propelling the racer over 300 mph, while the R-2 inherited the Wasp. Additionally, the R-1 received a larger fuel tank, making it a Bendix Trophy contender. The R-2 acquired a new wing with something novel for Super Sportsters—flaps.
