The line was converted to 4 ft8+1⁄2in ( 1,435 mm) standard gauge in 1886 [3] and was reorganized into the Detroit and Mackinac (D&M) on December 17, 1894.

The company incorporated on July 28, 1893, with the intention of building an 85-mile (137 km) line from Alpena to Mackinaw City, on the south shore of the Straits of Mackinac.
