Sam A. Baker State Park, located in the Francois mountain range, in Patterson, Missouri, is one of the oldest in the park system and perhaps the most classic. It combines history and great natural beauty with recreation. The St. Francois River and Big Creek, a tributary of the St. Francois, form the eastern boundary of the park.
Park Information. With the ancient St. Francois Mountains, the unspoiled natural landscape and the cool waters of the St. Francis River and Big Creek, Sam A. Baker State Park has something for everyone. Access to both the river and creek gives anglers the opportunity to hook many varieties of fish and canoeists the chance to float year-round.
The community has the name of George and William Patterson, pioneer citizens. Fort Benton, a nearby historic Civil War fortification, and the Sam A. Baker State Park Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Clark Mountain is located due west of Patterson while Aley Mountain is located northwest of Patterson.
There are 2 campgrounds at Baker, we stayed at campground 2. Bathhouse was clean, sites were level and tree covered. There is a lodge with meals on Sunday. Plus a small general purpose store at the park. There are also bike and horse trails in the park.We would consider staying there again.
