Foundation and early history The town was founded by Missouri leaders of the church, W. W. Phelps and John Whitmer in August 1836 shortly before the county's creation. The town was platted originally as a 1-mile (1.6 km) square area, centered on a public square which was to house a temple.

Kingston was established in 1843 and is currently the oldest town in existence in the county. SAVE THE DATE! A commemoration is scheduled for Saturday, September 8. Activities and events will take place on the public square, in front of the courthouse in Kingston, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The town site was a mile square, and lay five miles in a direct line northwest of where Kingston now stands...The numbers of the land comprising the original plat were the southwest quarter of Section 10, northwest quarter of Section 15, northwest quarter of Section 14, all in Township 36, Range 29.
