Located on the banks of the Wisła River, the castle was erected as a defensive structure. For centuries, it was the most important royal residence, but it also became an important location in the history of Polish culture.
The Royal Castle, a 16th Century baroque pile that stood at the entrance to the city’s ancient Old Town had already been badly damaged and looted after the invasion of 1939. On the 4th of September 1944, the castle’s walls were dynamited, leaving nothing but a huge pile of rubble.

Many years later, the revitalisation of its Old Town made it onto the UNESCO World Heritage List – but back then, in the wake of the wartime destruction, this was far from obvious.
