  8. Seven prisoners were shot and killed by guards while either attempting to escape (four) or in the 1946 riot (three). Two inmates were stabbed to death by fellow prisoners. A total of six prisoners escaped from Alcatraz and all were presumed to have drowned. At least one prisoner was a suicide.
