Aranjuez became one of the Royal Estates of the Crown of Spain in 1560, during the reign of Philip II. Until 1752, only royalty and nobility were allowed to dwell in the town. The cultural landscape of Aranjuez was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001.

It was also in the 16th century that the first attempt was made to tidy up the gardens, crops and forests of a territory that was beginning to grow. Paths and walkways, which have since been extended, were added to the area, allowing man to integrate easily with nature.
Aranjuez’s cultural landscape (its royal architecture but also, more broadly, its natural and man-made environment) was added to the UNESCO World Heritage site list in 2001. Aranjuez is on the main railway from Madrid (29 miles [47 km] north) and is a rich agricultural district.

The city centre of Aranjuez is also part of the World Heritage Site. It is a planned city built in the middle of the 18th century. Before then, the right to live in Aranjuez was restricted to members of the royal court. The city map has a symmetrical layout like a chessboard, but apart from that there is nothing remarkable.
The wide variety of wood harvested is used in the public interest notably for the conservation of historic artifacts and maintenance of the authentic assets of the Aranjuez world heritage sites. The adjacent hillside park with its reconstructed Arabic 'noria' waterwheel (which includes a small hydraulic demonstration site) was opened in 2013.
