Under the costume at the time was Betty Kane, the niece of Kathy Kane (aka Batwoman) but the character simply disappeared in 1964.

The duo entered DC as a way to stem fears that Batman and Robin were a little too gay for ‘60s comic book readers. Having Batgirl and Batwoman as a romantic interest for both Dick and Bruce was intended to ditch their campy image.
