My own belief is that Joseph did indeed die sometime between Jesus' twelfth birthday and His bursting on the scene, so to speak, at about age 30, though the fifth verse above (John 6:42) seems to indicate Joseph may have in fact been alive at the time of Jesus' "I am the bread of life" sermon:

Jan 16, 2024 · Joseph Caldwell died January 27, 1835, and was buried in the cemetery on the university campus. He was married first to Susan Rowan of Fayetteville in 1804, but after just a few years she and her newborn infant died. In 1809, he married a widow named Helen Hogg Hooper.
At about age fifty-six, Caldwell contracted a chronic illness that hampered his activities, to the sometime detriment of the institution, and eventually caused his death. Nonetheless, he produced several works during this period, most importantly his text on geometry A Compendious System of Elementary Geometry (1822).
