This week marked the 30th anniversary of the death of Karl Böhm. We looked through the Gramophone archive and found this interview with the legendary Austrian conductor from 1972 when the music critic Alan Blyth sought out Böhm in Salzburg.
In 1931, the Graz-born Böhm was appointed music director at Hamburgische Staatsoper. He served until 1934 when he left for the prestigious position at Dresden. As general music director at Dresden, Böhm had seized the opportunity to succeed Fritz Busch.

Upon Adolf Hitler’s intercession, Böhm was released from his contract as Hamburg’s General Music Director in 1934 to become the successor of Fritz Busch (1890-1951), whom the Nazi regime had forced to resign and emigrate, at Dresden’s Semper Opera.
He made his conducting debut in 1917 at the Graz Opera with Victor Nessler’s now forgotten Der Trompeter von Säckingen. In 1919 he was appointed as first conductor at Graz, giving up law altogether, and in the following year he was made chief conductor at Graz.
