He became the assistant director of music in 1919, and the following year, the senior director. On the recommendation of Karl Muck, Bruno Walter engaged him at the Bavarian State Opera, Munich in 1921. An early assignment here was Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail, with a cast which included Maria Ivogün, Paul Bender, and Richard Tauber.

Artistic Quality: 9. Sound Quality: 9. Karl Böhm left a huge recorded legacy sharply focused on the central Austro-German classics and on 20th century heirs such as Berg and Strauss. For most of his career he was overshadowed by his DG stablemate, the salable Herbert von Karajan, whose smoothly textured interpretations were more heavily promoted.
Henceforth Böhm was to hold no further permanent musical posts, preferring to guest-conduct exclusively. In 1957 he was engaged by Rudolf Bing, who had worked with him previously at Darmstadt, to appear at the Metropolitan Opera, New York. He made his debut in October that year with Don Giovanni, which was highly praised.
He said that there was an opening for a fourth conductor there and advised me to take that post, rather than the one in Graz, as it would give me a better chance to learn the repertory. I accepted, and stayed six years in Munich. For the first year I worked with Walter. Then in 1922 Knappertsbusch became musical director of the Munich company.
