By. James Bucki. Updated on 12/23/21. Heritage Auctions. The United States Mint began minting the new Kennedy half-dollar in January of 1964. Production of circulating coin began on January 30th at the Denver mint and about a week later at the Philadelphia mint.
Public sale started on March 24, leading to an enormous line to the Treasury Department’s window. The Treasury Department, plus Boston and Philadelphia banks, sold all their initial half-dollar stocks that day. Silver Shortage & Composition Changes. Demand remained high for silver Kennedy halves, so the Treasury Department increased mintages.
