In 1905, the first post office opened, and Milton became official two years later, in 1907, when the community voted 46-18 in favor of incorporation.

The Milton area became more reachable to more people, especially when what is now Highway 9 was established in the mid-to-late 1920s. Yet, the area continued to exist as a rural community, known as a peaceful, bucolic, and largely isolated place. However, Milton County was not isolated from what was happening beyond its borders.
County buildings were built, such as the Court House and Jail (now the new Town Hall) and the Registry Office (now the Hugh Foster Hall). In 1857 the town was formally incorporated and an election was held to form a Town Council. The first meeting of the Council was on July 4, 1857. At this time, “Milton” was confirmed as the name of the town.
