May 20, 2021 · Tennessee: There are birth records for the years 1908-1912 and 1914-1920. (The year 1913 is considered to be a “dead year” for birth records in Tennessee, since no birth records were recorded at the state level during that year. Texas: 1903.

Before 1874, no births were recorded by the county or state. You must search substitute records to locate your ancestor’s birth date and place.
In 1874, some Tennessee counties and cities began recording births, but coverage is incomplete. Delayed birth records exist as early as 1869. If you cannot locate your ancestor in the databases below, try searching for birth information in other records. For births that exist during this time period, try the following databases:
Most counties kept birth records beginning in 1908. Few of these records are available online. Chattanooga $, Knoxville $, Memphis Free, and Nashville Freebirth records are indexed online.
Statewide registration of births began in 1914 in Tennessee. Currently, there are no online indexes to Tennessee births from 1914 to the present.
Feb 14, 2016 · Beginning in 1881 some counties maintained birth and death records. A few continued for a longer period. These original records are housed in the county courthouses with many microfilm copies at the Tennessee State Library and Archives and The Family History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake City.
While Tennessee officially began keeping birth records statewide in 1908, the state did pass an earlier law that called for the keeping of birth and death records, starting in 1881. However, only a limited number of counties kept these records.

Tennessee began requiring birth records be kept statewide in 1908. However, the law requiring records to be kept lapsed at the end of 1912, therefore no records were kept in 1913. Statewide recordkeeping resumed in 1914.
Apr 9, 2015 · There was no official statewide registration of births and deaths in Tennessee before 1908. Four cities did keep some earlier birth and death records, which are available through the Tennessee State Library & Archives. Searches of these records can be requested by mail, if the year of the event is known.
