The Sacramento Fire Department (SFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services to the city of Sacramento, California. The department was first organized on February 5, 1850, the oldest in the state. It was not until March 30, 1872, when it finally became the first paid fire department west of the Mississippi River.

Jan 7, 2009 · The Sacramento Fire Department was established on February 5, 1850 when California’s first Fire Company was organized, Mutual Hook and Ladder Company #1. This first Fire Truck was a hand drawn piece of apparatus. The Sacramento Fire Department was an all volunteer force then, much like the rest of the nation’s Fire Departments.

Jan 3, 2022 · In fact, fire struck so often that on Feb. 5, 1850, a group of Sacramento citizens created Mutual Hook and Ladder No. 1—the first volunteer fire department in the western United States (though California would not officially become a state for another eight months).
Background. In 1872, the California State legislature enacted legislation creating a paid fire department in the City of Sacramento. On October 1 of that year, the newly created fire department replaced the volunteer fire departments that had existed since 1850.
