The history of the University of Maryland, College Park began in 1856, when the Maryland Agricultural College was chartered. The state took complete control of the school in 1916, and consequently the institution was renamed Maryland State College.
The state took control of the school in 1916 and renamed it Maryland State College. That year, the first female students enrolled at the school. On April 9, 1920, the college became part of the existing University of Maryland, replacing St. John's College, Annapolis as the university's undergraduate campus.

History and Mission. Timeline. 1800s. 1856. Maryland Agricultural College (MAC), forerunner of the University of Maryland, is chartered on March 6. 1858. For $20,000, Charles Benedict Calvert sells the state 428 acres of his Rossburg Farm slave plantation for the site of MAC. 1859. MAC is formally dedicated.
It was renamed Maryland State College in 1916, and in 1920, merged with the state's professional schools in Baltimore to become the University of Maryland. Between 1921 and 1953, the university was a member of the Southern Conference .
In 1959, the College of Special and Continuation Studies (founded in 1947) became the University of Maryland University College (UMUC). The Baltimore County campus (UMBC) was established in 1966. The University of Maryland reorganized into a five-campus system in 1970.
The College merged in 1920 with the Baltimore professional schools to form the University of Maryland with campuses at Baltimore (UMAB) and College Park (UMCP) (Chapter 480, Acts of 1920). The University of Maryland was designated a national sea grant college in 1983.
