     • Never include .c files
     • If you include something, it should be a .h file.
     • Code goes into code files, .c.
     • Headers, .h files, contain only what can be compiled more than once, i.e. declarations, macro definitions, more includes.
     • If necessary, headers use reinclusion guards.

     Whenever you feel tempted to include a .c file, you instead want to add it to your project so that it gets processed during building, i.e. gets compiled by its own and in a further build step gets linked into the created binary.

     The difference is that all the world uses XML and there's vast amounts of software for it, whereas SGML is used only by a small high priesthood and has very little software available.

     Technical differences in such a situation are largely irrelevant.

     I would assume you'd only load the configuration data once or rarely anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much about the performance side of things. A few points to consider though:

     • If you don't just need name/value pairs, a database is likely to provide a richer data model.
     • Storing the configuration in a database is likely to make it easier to share between multiple computers
     • Even with configuration in the database you'll need to configure the database connection itself...
     • Using a database for configuration if you don't need a database for anything else would seem a little odd, although you could potentially consider using an embedded database such as SQLite instead of a traditional client/server one.
     • Don't forget there are other alternatives beyond the two you've mentioned

     I think that Woodstox is the safest choice for correct operation, given its wide functionality and being de facto Stax standard implementation -- most Java XML/Soap frameworks use Woodstox. So if you just want least hassle all around, it is a good choice.

     But Aalto is significantly faster, and its features set is perfectly fine for Jackson XML module: DTD processing is not needed for JAXB-style data-binding.

     So I would say that this comes back to how much you value performance (Aalto) and how much simple no-hassle "it just works with no problems whatsoever" (Woodstox). That is how I would choose myself, if I was developing system myself.

     Besides, switching from one to the other is trivially easy: so one possibility is to try Aalto; and only if you face an issue (FWIW, there are no reported issue with Aalto/Jackson, as per issue tracker -- these are hypothetical issues).

     This might work for you (GNU sed):

     sed '/<MyTag>/!b;:a;/<\/MyTag>/!{$!{N;ba}};/MyText1/s/.*\n/&<FoundTag1>FoundIt<\/FoundTag1>\n/' xml_file-

     Look for a line containing <MyTag> if not bail out. Once found, collect lines until the line </MyTag> occurs, then check if those lines contain MyText1 and if so substitute <FoundTag1>FoundIt</FoundTag1> followed by a new line before the last line collected.
