The University of Karlsruhe was founded as a polytechnical school (Polytechnische Schule) on 7 October 1825. It was modelled on the École polytechnique in Paris. In 1865, Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden raised the school to the status of a Hochschule , an institution of higher education.

Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences goes back to the "Großherzogliche Badische Baugewerkeschule" (The Grand Duchy of Baden College of Building) founded in 1878. In 1919 it was renamed "Badische Höhere Technische Lehranstalt (Staatstechnikum)" (Baden Higher Technical School – State College of Technology).
