In December 2016, Studio Ponoc unveiled the first teaser of Mary and the Witch's Flower. The release date was set for July 8, 2017. In January 2017, Hayao Miyazaki visited Ponoc's offices to see his former collaborators, who have dubbed the studio as the "next generation of Ghibli".
