In 1931, for the 150th anniversary of Idomeneo ’s premiere, Richard Strauss created a revised version of that opera for Vienna that drew some attention to the piece. Revivals in 1951 at the Salzburg and Glyndebourne Festivals were, however, the true beginnings of a general re-evaluation of Idomeneo and Mozart’s opera seria style.

Nov 10, 2020 · When Mozart began composing Idomeneo in 1780, he still had Gluck’s operas in his ears, which he had seen two years earlier in his unhappy Parisian year. Mozart admired the works of the German, but also saw the weaknesses of the rigidity of the classical Opera Seria.

Sep 5, 2008 · The opera was first heard in Munich, in 1781. That premiere was a success, but the opera had only one other performance in Mozart's lifetime, and that was in a concert version, in Vienna, in 1786.
The libretto was adapted by Giambattista Varesco from a French text by Antoine Danchet, which had been set to music by André Campra as Idoménée in 1712. Mozart and Varesco were commissioned in 1780 by Karl Theodor, Elector of Bavaria for a court carnival. He probably chose the subject, though it might have been Mozart.
