Stockholm's historical records date back to the mid-13th century, although Viking settlements once thrived in the ancient city of Birka. To establish a fortified core for safeguarding Sweden from foreign threats, King Birger Jarl founded Stockholm in 1252, particularly in what is now known as Gamla Stan, or Old Town.
The area has been settled since the Stone Age, in the 6th millennium BC, and was founded as a city in 1252 by Swedish statesman Birger Jarl. The city serves as the county seat of Stockholm County. Stockholm is the cultural, media, political, and economic centre of Sweden.
