The Madras (Chennai) Music and Dance Season celebrated during the latter half of December and early part of January is a cultural extravaganza that has no parallel anywhere in the world. The Margazhi festival was started way back in 1927, as an event to commemorate with the founding of Madras Music Academy in the month of December.
He made his debut at the age of 13 in a concert given by the Alathoor Brothers at Nanrudayan Temple in Tiruchirapalli. Sankaran was awarded the Madras Music Academy's prestigious Sangeetha Kalanidhi title in 2011. As a mridangam virtuoso (vidwan), he has been called a "doyen among the percussionists of India" in Shruti Magazine.
