The University of Karlsruhe was founded as a polytechnical school (Polytechnische Schule) on 7 October 1825. It was modelled on the École polytechnique in Paris. In 1865, Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden raised the school to the status of a Hochschule, an institution of higher education.

Universität Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe University) goes back to the Polytechnical School established in 1825. It was one of the first of its kind in the German-speaking area. After its substantial reform, it developed to a model institute from 1832.

Most courses start in the winter semester (WS) and run from October until the middle of February. In the summer semester (SS), the earliest lectures start in April and end in July. There are also Christmas and Pentecost holidays.

It was later merged with Karlsruhe Research Center which was established in 1956.
Sep 3, 2020 · Starting in the 1960s, the university, which was renamed Universität Karlsruhe (TH) in 1967, underwent an extensive expansion, followed by internal divisions within the faculties established in 1972.
