In Fort Wayne, few companies loom as large in local memory as International Harvester. From 1923 until 1983, the company manufactured more than 1.5 million heavy-duty trucks and over 500 thousand Scouts (an early sports utility vehicle) from a complex on the city’s east side.

In 1904, the farm machinery business began manufacturing trucks, and, in 1937, Harvester consolidated motor production by building a foundry and an engine plant on a 75-acre site on the southeast side of Indianapolis. Employing 1,100 people, the plant produced its first engine in 1938.
