The Imperial Crypt (German: Kaisergruft), also called the Capuchin Crypt (Kapuzinergruft), is a burial chamber beneath the Capuchin Church and monastery in Vienna, Austria. It was founded in 1618 and dedicated in 1632, and located on the Neuer Markt square of the Innere Stadt, near the Hofburg Palace.
The Habsburgs are buried near Hofburg Palace in a crypt at a Capuchin church where there is still a cloister. The crypt is in the care of the monks from the cloister. Unlike any of the other burial sites I’ve visited, the church is small and is on a street with traffic, shops, and stores, restaurants, and cafes.
Burials still take place in the Imperial Crypt to this day. The last Empress of Austria-Hungary, Zita, was buried here in 1989, and in 2011 her eldest son, former Crown Prince and European politician, Otto Habsburg, was also laid to rest here alongside his wife, Regina.
Zita’s casket was borne to the Capuchin Church, where the Imperial Crypt is located, by the same coach she had walked behind during the funeral of Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1916. Over 200 Habsburg and Bourbon-Parma family members along with 8,000 other guests attended the funeral. Zita was buried in the Crypt Chapel of the Imperial Crypt.
