MT WHITNEY TRAIL CAMP - or High Camp (shown above) is one crowded location during peak season. It is located 6.0 miles from the trailhead and resides at 12,000 feet of elevation. Most overnighters use this camp as the stopping point before going on to the summit in the morning. Always camp at least 100 feet from any water source.

Mar 11, 2019 · Try to find a place to camp with minimal wind as it definitely picks up throughout the night. I was able to find a little cave that was perfect for “cowboy” camping (without setting up a tent)! Day 20: Guitar Lake to Whitney Portal. Miles: 19. JMT Miles: 221. Elevation Gain: 3,500 ft. gain. I highly recommend summiting Mt. Whitney for sunrise.

Whitney Portal Campground offers a total of 43 campsites and the majority can be reserved, but some sites are designated first-come, first-served.
