He was the head coach at the University of Kentucky from 2009 until the end of the 2024 season, which he led to one NCAA Tournament Championship in 2012.

Mar 18, 2024 · On the sidelines of the basketball court, Stringer became the first coach in college basketball history to lead three separate women’s teams to the Final Four. She first did it with Cheyney State in 1982; in 1993, she did it again with the University of Iowa; and she made it to the Final Four twice with Rutgers, first in 2000, then again in 2007.
In 1939, the first NCAA basketball championship tourney was played between Brown, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah State, Villanova and Wake Forest, with Oregon beating Ohio State for the title, 46-33. Like the NIT, the NCAA tournament would grow over time, most recently expanding to 68 teams.
Basketball began with its invention in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts, by Canadian physical education instructor James Naismith as a less injury-prone sport than football.
