He and his wife Geneviève, a visual artist and musician, lived blissfully intertwined creative and domestic existences, recently welcoming a daughter.

Mount Erie, elevation 1,273 feet, located in the west central area of Fidalgo Island, was named by Wilkes for the Battle of Lake Erie, won by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry during the War of 1812. Mount Erie is composed primarily of 167 million year old diorite, a hard igneous rock favored by rock climbers who climb the mountain’s south side cliffs.
