In 1939 Lowry had his first solo exhibition in London at the Lefevre gallery. The exhibition was successful, and many of the works sold, but in October that year, Elizabeth Lowry died. Lowry described his life as altering ‘utterly and completely’ after her death.
Lowry completed an oil painting of Christ Church, On the Quay, in 1954 – the year before he met Fell when she gave her first solo exhibition at the Beaux Arts Gallery in Mayfair.
