The Kent County Health Department (KCHD) received accreditation by the national Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) in 2014. The Health Department was just the second health department in the state to achieve this high honor. PHAB is the independent organization that administers the national public health accreditation program, which aims to improve and protect the health of the public by advancing the quality and performance of the nation’s Tribal, state, local, and territorial health departments. According to PHAB’s website, “Accreditation standards define the expectations for all public health departments that seek to become accredited. National public health department accreditation has been developed because of the desire to improve service, value, and accountability to stakeholders.” Accredited health departments must apply for reaccreditation five years after the date of their initial accreditation. KCHD will apply for reaccreditation in September 2019.
