Ruled by Baldwin I in 862, Flanders began to grow as a commercial centre, fostered by its strategic location between the Mediterranean Sea and the Scandinavian and Baltic countries. For most of the Great War, the Western Front ran from the Swiss-German border north toward the Belgian Coast and Ypres (Ieper) is commonly known as the centre of the Flanders Fields region.
