Sep 28, 2023 · The house was moved to its present location, at 644 Washington Avenue, from the southwest corner of Bibb and Lee Streets in 1921 to prevent damage as the neighborhood underwent renovation. Davis resided in the house for only three months, and thus much of the house’s story concerns the preservation efforts of the White House Association of Alabama.
Visit Website. This 1835 Italianate-style house was the executive residence of President Jefferson Davis and family while the capitol of the Confederacy was in Montgomery. It is furnished with original period pieces.
Completely furnished with original period pieces from the 1850s and 1860s, the 1835 Italianate style house is open to the public. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974. It is located across from the south side of the Alabama State Capitol, next door to Archives and History Building.

During the time that Montgomery served as the capital of the confederacy, the Davis family lived on Washington Avenue in an 1834 Italianized home that came to be known as the first White House of the Confederacy.
