- Castle. Why make an ordinary building when you can live in the most luxurious castle? Challenge yourself to make a living space fit for a king or queen potentially with some towers, giant walls, a courtyard, or maybe a moat.
- City. Minecraft usually does not have a bunch of civilizations in its expansive worlds. You will eventually run into a village, but there is nothing on the same scale as a large city.
- Famous landmarks. On a smaller scale, you can always design famous landmarks in a build challenge. How accurately can you make the Statue of Liberty? What about the Eiffel Tower?
- Pirate ship. Pirates are cool. That is why you and your friends should design your own pirate ship and claim the sea for yourselves. Make sure to include cannons, a captain’s quarters, and the basic amenities below deck.

This feature is exclusive to Java Edition.
Advancements are a way to gradually guide new players into Minecraft and give them challenges to complete, similar to the basic system of achievements in Bedrock Edition.
Advancements can be completed in any game mode, and are obtained and saved per world. Advancements can also be granted (and revoked) using the /advancement command.
Although advancements guide players logically through the game, they are independent of each other; an advancement can be completed without having completed the advancements "before" it. There are 110 of them: 16 in the Minecraft tab, 24 in the Nether tab, 9 in the The End tab, 35 in the Adventure tab, and 26 in the Husbandry tab.
The button to access the Advancements screen is found on the pause menu screen. The player can also open this screen by pressing L (this can be changed in the in-game options menu).
The advancement system involves several trees composed of advancements, each tree beginning with a root advancement from which several branches diverge. By clicking and dragging, the player can view different branches of an advancement tree. Each tree is categorized into different tabs (which are defined by the root advancements). Tabs are not visible if no advancements in the tab have been unlocked. There are currently five tabs in vanilla Minecraft:

•As an April Fools' Joke, the snapshot Java Edition 20w14∞ added a new advancement called "Almost there", achieved after going through any portal a billion times. The in-game description is "Visited over billion dimensions." The advancement is found in the "Adventure" tab and its parent is the advancement "Adventure." The advancement also has a flint and steel icon. The advancement can be granted using /advancement grant @s only minecraft:adventure/almost_there.
•As another April Fools' Joke, the snapshot Java Edition 22w13oneBlockAtATime added a new advancement called "Ride The End", achieved when an Ender Dragon is mounted.
