Sitting pretty at the nexus of three mountain ranges, the heavenly Whiskeytown Lake in Shasta County has welcomed plenty of visitors—and now, it’s your turn.
Whiskeytown Lake’s crystal-clear water is perhaps the most recognized feature of the park. However, water-based recreation is only a part of what the 42,000-acre preserve has to offer. Visit waterfalls, hike through rugged mountains, explore California Gold Rush history, and observe post-fire ecology in action.
With more than 36 miles of shoreline—plenty of space for sunbathing, summer-novel reading, and sandy picnics—this is a spot for summer chillaxing. The lake takes its name from the Gold Rush mining town beneath its waters, which was inundated after the building of 282-foot Whiskeytown Dam in 1963.
Aug 24, 2020 · NPS. Whiskeytown Lake is a fantastic location to enjoy a refreshing swim on a hot day. This lake has about 37 miles of shoreline. During the summer months surface water temperatures can reach nearly 80°F. There are three main swim beaches with amenities, Brandy Creek Beach, Oak Bottom Beach and East Beach.
